Before anyone says it. Yes, I did the search! Nothing.

Can anyone tell me if you can get Travellers Checks in Saudi? Specifically in Riyadh? What do you have to do to buy them, have an iquama or anything? Thanks.

Try the Saudi Travellers Cheque Company (http://www.saudicheque.com/).

I've never used them. (Seriously, who doesn't travellers' checks anymore?) But perhaps another poster has.

Yes, you can.
If you have a Visa or MasterCard with your Saudi bank, then you can use it to withdraw money from Cash machines abroad. I used my Riyadh bank visa card to withdraw money in UK with no problem, and it is much better than using travel cheques.
If you do not have a bank account, then it is a different story.

I didn't know anyone ever used the things anymore. I haven't used them since the mid-90s. The ubiquitous ATM machines has pretty much killed that business.

Even the last time I used them, it was very hard to find a place that would cash them without a great deal of hassle and wait time...

They are bad news now. Difficult and expensive to encash. My advice - get cash in an easily-conertible currency (US doillars or EUs). Back up with ATM card.

I used Al Amoudi for cash. Al-Rajhi has reportedl;y moved out of the foreign currency business. Banks are not interested.

Travelers Checks have their uses. Very good as an alternative to
carrying near- limit amounts across borders and through airports.
A couple of the Saudi banks sell TC's denominated in riyals, which
is a very convertible currency in many of the enjoyable destinations
in the world, and won't depreciate.
