I have a BA, a CELTA, and a few years teaching experience (including in Saudi Arabia at a university, and at an institute in Dubai a decade ago).
I can't seem to find job offers. Does anyone know a place that's hiring that I might be qualified for - at a high school or university?
Thank you. |

Unless you have a teaching license, you're not qualified to teach high school, and generally, UAE universities expect to see a relevant master's degree + a minimum of 3 years of experience. However, try the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT); they hire BA holders. |

You will need a (relevant) Masters for any university-level post, and QTS for a high school position. HCT may well have formerly employed those with no Masters, but if so then it was a fair time ago. Even those in (what for many are) the less desirable locations (RAK, Madinat Zayed, etc.) have Masters, and have had for some time. |

Not the case. Check out their current openings, which, by the way, are about to expire. |

A relevant Masters is a prerequisite for a decent post in the UAE, and I will leave it at that! |

HCT ads have always said that a BA+CELTA is the minimum. But the reality is that the MA holders go to the front of the line for hiring. Those that I have known there with the minimum were last minute hires in Sept when classes were starting tomorrow and were local hires. The other exception is that rare person who has been teaching around the Middle East for 10-20 years and never had the chance to get an MA.
And those that are hired seem to be pretty much "forced" to get that MA done if they want to stay for a second contract.

I agree. As I said in my intial post (and in other threads throughout this forum), UAE universities expect to see a relevant master's degree + a minimum of 3 years of experience. However, the OP can certainly apply at HCT with his BA, as stated in their ad. Whether he gets hired (or even an interview) is another story since he would be competing against MA holders. That's the reality in this region for those with barely-there qualifications. |
