I have tentatively been offered an adjunct position at Zayed University. I have been told that the offer of a contract depends upon the number of students enrolled. What I am not clear about is how it works once I am an adjunct? I know that is a vague question, but it was a pretty quick interview and we didn't really get into the fine details of hours, responsibilities and such. I would appreciate any first hand knowledge. Many thanks.

Adjunct faculty teach part time and/or on a temporary basis for a specified period of time. Pay is usually compensated hourly and benefits aren't provided. (This applies to university adjuncts in general.)

According to Zayed's faculty handbook, "Most courses at Zayed University are taught by full-time faculty members. The University does however hire a limited number of qualified adjunct faculty who provide added value to a program or help fill temporary faculty shortages." (www.zu.ac.ae/)

Paxtus.

Adjunct work usually does not provide you with a work visa, it won't include housing, education or gratuity. Adjuncts can be worked more hours peer week than some FULL TIME instructors

But on the plus side...
1. Adjuncts only have to be onsite when you are teaching. So if you are not teaching, you don't have to be there. So that means no committee work, not sitting around twiddling your thumbs, no counting down the minutes until you leave.
2. If you are teaching 16 hours, you actually make more in direct salary than many full time instructors.
