Hi all. Ive decided to come to Vietnam to begin a career in ESL/EFL. I have no previous experience, though Im totally keen and willing to take all the necessary steps.

Ill be arriving in a few weeks and Id really appreciate if someone could confirm that Ive made all the necessary pre-arrangements in respect to obtaining work and a work permit (though I understand that the permit might not necessary for working for the first 3 months?):

- One-way ticket - check (is this ok?)

- Tourist visa (3 months) - check.

- University degree - check.

- National Police Record - check.

- Notarisation of documents (degree, police check, ?) -- NO; where do I do this?

- Travel insurance - NO; suggestions for travel insurance compatible with one-way ticket?

- Collection of TEFL/English reference books - check.

- TEFL cert -- BIG NO; Actually Im booked in to do a CELTA in October, so late, because I thought this is such an intensive course that I ought to get a bit of experience before beginning, preferably with paid work but Im totally open to volunteering a few weeks before Ive got the hang of things. So, Im thinking of getting an online TEFL for now -- I know these are generally looked down on, but I also know of people in Vietnam whove managed to find work with an online diploma alone -- so Im looking for suggestions on the best online TEFL I can get for my buck until I get my CELTA.

- What have I forgotten?!

Actually Im terribly stressed now that my departure date is approaching, so any and all input will be tremendously appreciated. Thank you all very much in advance!

Forget the online TEFL. Waste of money and time as not recognised by the places that will (might) get you a WP.

Good idea to do a CELTA here and good idea to try to find bits and pieces of work first. Many folks embark on a CELTA and hate what it involves. Plus, many have the wrong idea about teaching EFL and can't cope with the low wages/lack of security/status.

No idea how to notarise docs in Oz - someone will know. Try the Korean board as it must be the same procedure and they HAVE to do this step while many here do not bother...

Keep money in hand for a quick exit if you have a problem.

Also - bring about 3000USD to subsidise your first few months here - you may be paid little or nothing at first.

Insurance is a tricky one. I am doubtful travel insurance will cover you if living and working here - sure they'll take your $$$ but may jump through the numerous loopholes when you claim. [What - you were riding a motorbike with no local licence and broke your leg - not covered!]

Many reference books are cheaper here than UK (not sure why) and are heavy to pack. Bring other stuff like socks/underwear/shoes if your sizes are not 'small'. Outerwear you can get made cheaply and to a better standard than most shop bought stuff.

Advisable to get some vaccinations.

has good advice.

When considering a 'career' in TEFL remember the difference between a TEFL teacher and a large pizza is that a pizza can feed a family of four.
