I am looking at Taichung as an alternative to Taipei. I know it is less polluted, but what about the work?

Are the jobs more or less abundant there?

Is the average pay as high as in Taipei?

I'm also interested in the answer to this question.

I heard taichung is cheaper, but not sure how much. Actually, I've heard Taiwan in general is cheaper than Korea/Seoul. Anyone have any knowledge of that?

Also curious about the pay in Taichung if it's cheaper than Taipei. Any idea also the size/development of the city? Seems like there would be stuff to do, nightlife, etc.

I don't think the job situation is any better in Taichung than in Taipei, and if it is only marginally.

I would say the starting pay at a cram school is virtually identical. There are more options for jobs with higher pay in Taipei, but you would need quite a bit of experience to get those jobs.

Hope this helps.

Things may have changed, but the easiest place to get a job in 2011 and 2012 was Hsinchu or other small towns around there.

If you don't want to live in Taipei, you might consider living in that area.

I was only in Taichung for a summer about six years ago now, so I can't help with job stuff, but...

I had a couple of thousand to my name at the time and I wasn't at any point worried about going broke. I probably could have stayed a few months more if I was so inclined. It's far cheaper than Korea.

Taichung itself is a decently sized place, but the street layout makes it a bit clumsy and inconvenient to get around. Cabs did take the scenic route. Buses seemed spotty at best. Everyone is in a car or on a scooter. Only madmen and foreigners seemed to ride bikes or walk there given the heat. There were a decent amount of malls, bars, restaurants, parks. And a Costco.

And there was a healthy... not mention a friendlier-than-in-Korea-and-Japan... expat population.

Is it possible to save money in Taiwan based on a simple lifestyle working for a cram school?

One can save money anywhere. It just depends what lifestyle you want. You might also consider working online in the morning to increase your income.

Most cram school jobs are 2PM-8PM. Unless you are teaching adults, you won't work in the morning.
