Are these certificates given as much merit as having earned it in the classroom? |

In time it should be. You still do the same observed teaching of real students and the same observations of trained teachers - from the pdf I downloaded.
You are just not doing the theory in class but online which could work. I think the option to do group/pair work in class is a positive aspect of face to face courses and if you can spare the time I would recommend it.
In a country like Vietnam you may have to do more explaining about how your online CELTA really is a CELTA, and given the language problems and at times total ignorance of the school managers who hire us that may be a problem.
Places that really want you to have a CELTA will probably be willing to take an online CELTA though.
So it's a yes - probably.... |

I get the impression from the Cambridge website FAQ's on the subject that as of this time, the online (perhaps it should be called hybrid) course is only available at some locations. Where are you thinking about taking it, or is your question just academic? |

Thanks for your answers.
I'm thinking classroom would be better than online (I spend too much time on the computer and need more interaction with others).
I'd like to take it in the U.S. where I live. |

I'd find out what the certificate looks like. If it's the same as the regular CELTA certificate, then just say you've got a CELTA on your CV and say you did it in the location where you did your teaching practice. In fact, just do that anyway. |
