Hey, folks! I'm starting the visa process, and just had my first look at the "Physical Examination Record for Foreigner." I notice that it asks, right up at the top, if I've ever had any of a succession of nasty diseases.

As it happens, I contracted scarlet fever at the age of seven or eight (consequently missing a much-anticipated field trip to Shedd's Aquarium). Given that it's been more than twenty years, I doubt those antibodies are of concern to anyone, but the checkbox doesn't give much room for elaboration. If I check "yes," am I in for any grief?

Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.

No, you didn't, you're confusing yourself with someone who has never encountered the Chinese inability to think it through. That person wouldn't know that the Chinese person reading your form is incapable of rationalising that it was more than twenty years ago so there's no danger. That person doesn't realise that if you tick the box there's a very good chance they will pick up the 'refused' stamp instead of the 'allowed' stamp because they were told that's what they should do if you ticked the box.

In the immortal words of Dirty Harry, 'you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?'

Au contrair, mon frere.

If you fail to tic the box, the Chinese will place calls to your childhood doctor, 2nd grade teacher, and Aunt Jenny to ascertain whether you are lying.

Because we all know Chinese are so industrious, strict, and conscientious.

As with customs declarations when in doubt always check "no" and play the dumb foreigner card when / if (not likely) called out.

If they can't test for it then it's not important, and for what it's worth Scarlet Fever sounds pretty, not "nasty" so you're not exactly lying.

That sounds like a consensus. Thank you very much!
