|
|
Hi
I have received an offer from Sohar University:
Monthly Basic: 1105 OR
Accommodation: 250 OR
Transportation: 80 OR
Scarcity: 75 OR
I am not an English teacher though, I will be teaching engineering subjects. I have MSc from UK and 4 years teaching experience at KSA. I am also doing my PhD part-time.
Can anyone please suggest me if the offer is a good one or not? I do understand that the life expenditure will be higher in Oman than that of KSA. How much? Any idea? How is life in Sohar? Any recent update on the house rent? |

Its not a particularly good offer. MOHE English teachers with a Masters and 4 years experience get 1500 OMR plus a soft loan of 1800 OMR to buy furniture.
What are the terms, e.g. Holiday entitlement, working hours...? |

I believe a soft loan is where if teachers stay for the entirety of their contract, the repayment is waived. If they cancel employment anytime before, they must pay it back in full, or pro rata depending on how long they've worked. |

7 weeks of summer holiday, 18 hours of lectures plus other duties totalling 40 hours a week.
The links were very useful ... |

I'll put it with the many other "terms of little use" that I have picked up over the years. I'll never need them beyond Dave's Cafe.

The teaching load is fairly typical, Ministry get 60 days a year hols but weekends are counted unlike the UK.
The soft loan has been explained. |

yes, but the MoHE English teachers are not the norm; they are well paid, compared to the average English teacher's salary; it is no fair to use MoHE teachers as the yardstick;
In private unis ESl teachers work for around 1000 plus housing, andy many profs with PhD work for 13oo-14oo OR a month, housing included in this sum, many a time for less; the truth is rather bleak;
