I am looking to teach in Shanghai. I am 21 and will have my bachelors in June. Although I have 2 years of teaching experience throughout my time in undergrad I obviously do not have any post grad teaching experience since I have not graduated. I am willing (and expecting) to get a 120 hour TEFL certificate.

I have been offered a position in Beijing but my heart is really set on Shanghai.

However, many companies claim they cannot get you a Z visa for Shanghai if you are under 24 and do not have at least 2 years of post graduate teaching experience. Others, such as Kid Castle, have claimed that only certain institutions have the certification to accept those under age 24.

Does ANYONE have an experience with this? Has anyone taught with a Z visa under 24 in Shanghai?

I have tried seeking advice from every source I could think of (embassy, recruiters, schools) to no avail.

Any piece of advice is welcomed. I have never been through a more difficult or confusing process.

Best advice may be to take the Beijing offer, for a year or six months, and then transfer /move to Shanghai . I much prefer Shanghai to Beijing , and BJ has the worse pollution, but living in either city would give you a very similar experience, IMO.

Or , if you are game , come to Shanghai and look for a job on the ground. Not recommended for everyone , and you need funds in case nothing turns up and you have to go home.
Each city here, and especially the major metropoli, is a law unto itself and only those in SH can tell you what's possible.
Try also the SH expat forums , there are at least two , for advice, and jobs.

I worked for Kid Castle, in Shanghai's Hongkou district, when I was 31... If that helps. I was part of a cohort of students from an undisclosed SoCal University, who crookedly sent wannabe MA candidates from an undisclosed town in Orange county to shady institutions throughout Shanghai and Hongzhou, many of whom were under 24, and they all received Z visas, if I'm not mistaken, so you should be okay. It would be best to be in the country if you want to work for Kid Castle. Their pay is not bad, but they will work you, but the good thing is that they should be paying your housing.

Hope that helps.

All the best.

The two years of experience isn't necessary in Shanghai. Usually schools "get around" this one by simply editing your resume. I checked the resume my company sent in, and it was exactly the same as the one I gave them, which had no educational experience. As for the age restriction, I can't speak for 21, but I was 22 when I arrived in Shanghai and that was no problem. That said, I never had to get a Z visa. I arrived on an L visa, and they gave me an FEC and Residence Permit.

I advise that you apply to some companies and see what happens. It all depends on whether or not SAFEA and the Shanghai PSB want to give you the documents to apply. If they do, then great. If not, wait or try somewhere else.
