American Police check from abroad question

Hello!
I am an American heading to Vietnam in September. I have been living in Australia since last September and will be flying from Oz to HCMC.
I know I will need a federal police check in order to get a proper work visa. But since I am already living abroad its going to be a hassle.
Question is, should I apply for a police check now and have it sent to me here in oz? Or wait until I have a job that requests it? Or would they accept an Aussie police check since it is my most recent address?
