It is something like $6 a day, but it depends on the exchange rate. I used to work with a man who overstayed by a year and had to pay $1000 US, but I think he was able to negociate down as it should have been higher. |

The best place to negotiate an overstay fine is an airport. In the case of DF, they are strict on corruption at the INM office so negotiating is hard. Airport officials are easier to deal with...you can even avoid a fine completely if you get the right agent. |

There used to be a maximum fine. I remember reading the regulations and it say a find of $X per dium not to exceed the maximum of $X.
I think the airport is also easier because you have a boarding pass in hand and are clearly leaving the country. |

I have also heard that if you leave the country towards Guatemala you can say that you have lost your tourist card, and they will just let you may that fine. Apparently they are not computerized yet. However, as others have pointed out, if they are on the ball they can look at your passport and see when you arrived, so that might open up a whole other can of worms. |

Why would you overstay? Easy overnight bus service from Mex DF to the US Border and a bit longer run south to Guatemala. Flights to Havana, Cuba daily... Plenty of ways to re-start a Mex visa. |

Yeah, ESPECIALLY one or two months??? If you get the WRONG agent you might be looked at as a blatant scofflaw.
On the bright side,

you can say that you have lost your tourist card |
; that would probably work.

, but every entry stamp I've gotten, you couldn't read the date, it was either too faint or too smudged. |
