Does anyone know if it is possible to reside in Thailand and apply for an Iqama to Saudi from here? Or, is it necessary to fly home to the USA?

In 2003, I was in Thailand and got a job in KSA. At the time, I was told I had to return to the USA for the work visa, which I did. I think you still have to go back to the USA and go through the expensive hassle of getting the proper visa.

You could ask your future employer to send the visa to Bahrain where you can complete the medical (HIV/TB etc) as well. Pick up the visa after getting the medical completed at a local clinic, and take a short flight to wherever you're going in KSA. Job done. Don't forget to take original degree (or copy with embassy stamp/lawyers testimony - any reputable firm -). Bahrain also like to see any certificates of teaching and references so they know you are a teacher - though this is not important if you have the invitation from the employer, but you will need a police report - Royal Thai Police Report is okay if it covers 6 months, or you can get one from USA online now.
