|
|
Hello,
I am researching salaries for the average entry-level teacher (i.e. no experience, bachelor’s degree, and either a TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certificate). Most schools have a standard rate for entry-level teachers. This is also assuming an entry-level teacher can get a job at that particular school (e.g. I know it’s difficult for an entry-level teacher to get into RMIT but not impossible with a Pass A or B CELTA).
The ones I know are:
- ILA pays 28,835,000VND salary, plus 420,000VND/hour of overtime. Based on my research, this typically averages to 36,000,000VND per month.
- RMIT pays a little over $3000 per month.
What about British Council, VUS , AIS, Apollo, and others?
Thanks,
Nikola |

MOD EDIT
You numbers for ILA are a bit inflated. The experienced IELTS teachers may earn that, but a new teacher doesn't. They take home only 25 million and they don't even get name tags, but you get an "Education for Life" T-shirt which you can wear to your next job interview. |

I'm also looking at Vietnam. I'm in another Asian country now and I'm thinking about making the move. But 25 million sounds pretty bad. I thought that I've heard that the salaries were good in Hanoi. Like $1500-$2000. |

Duly noted, Tigerstyleone. I should have referenced my resources. That figure came from three close and reliable entry-level teachers/friends who taught at ILA 20-hours per week on average. But, I should have also noted that the figure is pre-tax. The 12-month average is also skewed higher because they all volunteered for summer school which netted them approximately 46,000,000VND in June.
They agreed the net salary was around 25 million VND in the first few months until they built up their bank of hours and were offered more overtime opportunities. After factoring in taxes, hellish summer school, Tet, holidays, and the unintelligible “bank of hours” system, they’ve agreed that their average salaries covering a 12-month full-time contract came out to 30,000,000VND per month net income.
I’m inquiring because I believe other schools might offer entry-level teachers a more competitive salary than ILA offers (and, agreed… a name tag!).
Cheers,
Nikola |

Salary is important of course, but focus on a school that provides support and professional development.
You are cutting your teeth .
After you get some experience and progress through the learning curve you can focus on increasing income more specifically.
Just my .02. |

Entry level teachers who apply from overseas are at a disadvantage. Many of the more reputable schools don't advertise online too much online. I think more people have found success just coming to Vietnam and then looking for jobs.
The job market in Hanoi seems to be better than Saigon at the moment. So if you're going to look or the higher salaries, I'd start there. I saw ACET is hiring in Hanoi at the moment. |

Health insurance, holiday and severance pay, transport, and work permits are other perks to look for. |
