Looked through the FAQ and couldn't see this basic one.
I'm British
I'll be entering Japan on a tourist visa in a few days time.
What should I know?
How long a visa can I get?
Do I need a return ticket?
Will I need an address in Japan?
Will I encounter any problems bringing in a largish amount of yen?
Any advice will help - sorry if it's an old topic.

Work visas are for 1 year or 3 years, at the whim of immigration, so you and your employer cannot request either one. You get what you are given.
Working holiday visas (applied for from your home country only) are good for two 6 month stints.

As a tourist, probably. Otherwise, your entry into the country will look suspicious.

Yes, but even a hotel address will do.

How much? Customs doesn't search tourists for money anyway? Just bring something safely, as in traveler's cheques.

Some basic Japanese won't hurt.
Some basic Japanese etiquette won't hurt.
Have a game plan in mind. That is, prepare good quality resumes, know how to make a good cover letter, pack a decent interviewing suit, bring enough money to pay for a ticket to Seoul if you are asked to go there to finish the processing of a work visa, prepare to have medicines shipped to you, understand that street addresses in Japan are not consecutive so you should plan well in advance to find a place when you go for an interview, learn what you can about getting a cell phone and where you can locate Internet cafes (unless you bring a laptop computer, in which case you will need to plan for Internet access where you live), etc.
Oh, and know that for every eikaiwa job, there are probably dozens to scores of people applying. Know what to say in an interview. |

Any advice will be rendered pretty useless with that timeframe. Good luck with getting through Glenski's list in 72 hours though! |

Not laidback - just needs must when the devil drives...
I think I can enter with a return ticket and get a tourist visa when I arrive - how long do I get? I entered at Osaka for a visa run and it seemed simple.
I will be staying with friends in Tokyo so will have a plausible address to make it look realistic.
I have a bit of Japanese, and etiquette I basically understand - at least I know it's important.
Thanks for the advice - any more is appreciated.
