Hi everyone.

I realize this is a ridiculous question in the context of Western culture. However, it is no secret that Hong Kong will pay white people more. In many cases, they will pay people who are white with English accents more as well. I wonder if this extends to hair colour.

I am a light skinned, blue eyed girl with jet black hair. I'm Scottish and it runs in the family. However I dyed my hair light blonde before I came to Hong Kong. It was a coincidence but then my family said I might stand out more so I kept it up. Now I want to go back to my natural colour as the upkeep is annoying and expensive. However I'm now worried about my job security! Will I command a lesser rate with dark hair?

Not so ridiculous a question if you weren't here and couldn't look around, or ask around. But you are, aren't you? Do you not have any western colleagues? (genuine questions - if you're out in some village, I guess you won't see much)

I know plenty of blond/black haired westerners here, equally well/badly paid in EFL.

My mousy light brown locks haven't stopped me. Neither has my Scottishness. My wife has changed her hair colour a few times, without being sacked or docked pay.

I'd say don't worry.

Hair colour is no problem at all - lots of caucasians have black hair.

Haha, well I don't want to stroll up to a random fellow Caucasian and ask if their hair colour influences their pay. Forums are good for slightly odd questions.

I also haven't started my job, only signed a contract, so I can't observe it yet.

Thanks for your input.
