What souvenirs have you bought for family and friends? Where did you buy them and how well were they received?

I thought it might be useful to have a list of gift ideas, so that it's easier to choose among the gazillion items for sale in Japan.

When I go souvenir shopping, I don't know where to start. I imagine many others have the same problem.

For those seeking postcards in the Yokohama area, go to Chinatown and look for one of a few large souvenir shops. They have postcards there as well as some small gift items like tote bags with Yokohama printed on them. I think those were about 600 yen.

From the 100 yen shop:

- Obscure Hello Kitty items.

- Folding paper fans.

- Origami kits.

If you want to spend a little more:

- Japanese whisky -- whisky lovers are aware that Japan makes good stuff these days

- presentational boxes of senbei (rice crackers)

Gag gifts:

- surume (dried squid) Preferable the kind that looks like it's a dried squid.

A trip to Don Quixote and you'll be all set. Mine is in one of the more remote places, so no aisles of adult toys next to the character goods, but some of the gems I've found there:

*Yukata sets for men and women (the young girls on your souvenir list will appreciate these)
*Character everything- need a pillowcase shaped like My Melody or a set of Nameko curtains? Check.
*Pajama sacks- they have a Japanese name, but I can't remember it at the moment. 3000 yen for what US people usually pay around $100 to import. I bought a Kapibarasan one but they have Pikachu, Kitty, Disney, etc.
*And yes, pillows shaped like bikinis.
