Newbies take not that the bank machines shut down for a few days during the New Years holidays (I guess giving people access to their money is NOT an essential service in Japan). Or maybe the machines need a holiday too.
Does anybody out there know on which days most banks will shut down their machines? |

I guess they're closed on the bank holidays. Check on Japanese calendar or diary.
By the way, if you live in an area infested with 7-11 convenience stores, you really should consider using a bank such as Shinsei that gives you access to the 7-11 ATMs 24/365. |

When I lived there many ATMs would run out of money some time during the New Year period. You could find the working ones but the long long queues. |
