This poll is to find out how widespread the 'requirement' for criminal checks is.

I'm looking for information about people whose invitation letters have been requested since July 1st, even though in theory the new visa regulations and the criminal checks are separate things.

I'm interested in seeing the results too. Those who have replied/going to reply, could you flesh out your response, for example, where you teach, what sort of institution etc?

My RP is currently processing. No background check. Also, have never heard one word about the increased social welfare taxes.

There are 6 foreigners working legally in the same town as me. All of them work for my school, and our boss is friends with the chief of police. She could probably get a porcupine an RP if she wanted to.

I'll let you know next week. I'm moving house on Monday, so my uni, in Zhuhai, Guangdong, has delayed applying for my RP until I've moved. They did get the renewal of the FEC though, about three weeks ago, with no paperwork required from me other than a renewal form.

I believe they're required in Inner Mongolia, too. I saw something about that a long time ago on here. This is a good topic, I'm curious, too. It would also be good to know if they need a federal (FBI, I would assume) or state check.

So far five (33%) have said yes and they're outside of Beijing. Wonder where they are.

Oh, I think Americans will need everything. I think this is going to be particularly expensive for Americans.

This isn't something that's been particularly thought out, and it's still evolving. For Americans it could take 5-6 weeks and a lot of money to get this. (here's a link to the FBI page http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/criminal-history-summary-checks/submitting-a-criminal-history-summary-request-to-the-fbi). I know the FBI aren't asking for a lot of money but by the time you've got your fingerprints, translated things into Chinese, got it stamped by the Chinese consulate etc, you could be looking at over 2 months just on this.

On the other hand, I've heard of people being told that they just need to write a letter and sign it saying they're not a criminal, which would be cheaper and faster, albeit slightly less definitive.

To sum up, this is evolving, which is why I started the poll. So far it seems quite clear cut. New permits need one, renewed ones don't. However, as someone wisely pointed out on the main criminal check thread, this isn't a national 9federal) thing. It's all just local interpretation, and the other thread does suggest local variations. I believe there's always been a requirement to 'state' that you aren't a criminal. I don't remember ever actually confirming it, but I suspect there's a box of the application form for permits in Chinese that our FAOs or admin staff have been ticking on our behalf.

I can't believe 3 people have clicked the last option.

New arrivals, please keep voting.

Yeah, when you fill out the application for the L and Z visa there's a question about it, something like "have you ever been convicted of a crime".

You would think a backwater like Henan would be trying to encourage foreigners to come. There are going to be a lot of teaching positions left vacant in Henan province this year.

But think of the pickings for teachers who are there... IF it gets enforced..which I don't think it will.

In other news there's been an influx of 'students' to Henan...

If the FBI check is required, good luck. The people one must deal with are the least inspired people in the U.S. who answer the phone for two hours per week.

The few recruiters I've corresponded with lately don't know much about it, which leads me to believe that almost anything would be accepted.

I began working a job stateside two years ago that required a CBC, and an outfit called CrimChek did it for $47.00. It covered all of the places where I lived plus whatever appeared on a national database. The FBI check would have taken too long and they weren't very cooperative when I called, even though there's a department for this function and a phone number.

Nothing showed up (of course) on my CBC. I had a parking ticket that went back quite a way plus a recent expired automobile inspection ticket that didn't show up.

More likely there will be less foreigners teaching there if it gets enforced. Schools in places like Henan struggled to attract teachers now, by making it harder, it will mean less schools will be able to hire foreign teachers, not a big deal for universities, but it will hurt the private language schools.
