|

This from a language centre in Hanoi:
** Before any of the candidates are officially offered a place at the Academy, they have to go through the following stages:
Stage 1: The interview
Stage 2: Voluntary observation
Stage 3: Compulsory observation
Stage 4: Partial teaching and leading in class
Stage 5: Official training
Stage 6: Evaluative teaching
Before each stage the candidates will have a meeting with the management for discussions and updates on the details, regarding responsibilities of each of the parties during the stage, benefits and remuneration.
The time it takes for a candidate to go through the stages will vary from candidate to candidate, with factors such as energy, enthusiasm, devotion…. |

And how long will this obstacle course take? Scary.
This is an organization that you want to avoid.
A clear sign they have made major mistakes recently/in the past or have NO IDEA what they are doing.
$18 per hour? Gross.
ever heard of checking references? Checking any docs to see if authentic?
I am sure this place is just raising a fake bar to try to.....attract good candidates?
You ought to name and shame this place. |

Many that have stayed in Hanoi have left teaching altogether and entered a different 'career' path. More have left, either to HCMC or out of the country.
Hanoi, over the past 6 months or so is showing how NOT to implement change in policy. Again, in theory it is a good idea, but as we can see, in a couple of years, maybe earlier, we will be back to business as usual.
What gets me is some naive and eager native speaker has actually written that ad for this language centre.
In the end I just gave up and my interview became: 'Do you want a job?" "Please take the job." |

The whole job ad is ridiculous, but, for me, the above quoted part, in particular, makes me want to cringe . |

Isn't that why we work? This ad is so freckin stupid I think it is worth an email... I should enjoy slogging through ridiculous traffic, dealing with staff who don't give a shit and 80000 degree temperatures for free?
Looks like this is a new school in Hanoi, should last about 6 months like the majority of them. |

I recently left Hanoi because a family member is ill. But I am not sure if I want to return, after being away.

vabeckele,

Sure,
The cadres of Hanoi have implemented a huge change by taking away the need for 'extra' classes by schools by having students come into contact with English at public schools at an earlier age.
This makes life a bit more difficult as this is not done through the schools but by many different recruiters feeding the schools us teachers. It has a quite a few consequences but in monetary terms the teachers are getting less and less. This is because the recruiters take, perhaps as much as 70% of our cut. Hourly wages have been as low as 15 dollars an hour. So this adds to the problem of what we faced before (same people same chit). Only now it is supposedly behind closed doors so nobody can see.
And if you think about yourself at school as a youngster and your motivation to learn French or Spanish with the 'hippy' teacher, just think of the Vietnamese. A very different atmosphere from kids whose parents are paying for private lessons.

This is a good, accurate thread report with some excellent replies as well. Good to see we're getting quality posters lately.

Exactly, it's funny how schools make it so obvious they are in a panic and do a sort of lockdown - full alert thing.
However, I would not say that this is above even the "good schools." In what I'm seeing even the more established "schools" are using some of these over-the-top policies when they see fit. |
