And now even the British are involved in torture of Iraqi's.
Someone sent me this web link showing me the photos of the american troops abusing Iraqi's and I nearly threw up. Doesnt it make you proud to be a so called freedom loving westerner just goes to prove human beings can be evil no matter what their nationality or religion.

Yes it makes me sad and somewhat sick. But there were British troops doing this, too. |

I think that's what he said in his first sentence, no? |

Was it Primo Levi who wrote that every one of us has the capacity to be like the guards in the Nazi death camps? So long as we as individuals recognise that fact we should be OK. |

I may get slammed for personalizing this issue, as it's MUCH MUCH bigger than my insignificant personal problem, but I have to say I feel awkward these days standing in front of my new class of immigrants, which includes Iranians, Afghanis, Saudis, and many students from North African countries, and introducing myself as an American.....
Fortunately, I've never in the past six years had a student who blamed every American for the politics of the country. They've all been very open-minded; it's just those initial introductions that always make me feel a bit weird.
Sadly, the latest news never seems to help much.
What can we do to help make things better?
I've been helping with a pre-get-out-the-vote effort for US expats abroad, but I suppose my faith in the "every little effort helps" idea is being shaken. |

http://www.albasrah.net seeing the pics here of deleted uranium from our troops mutilating and deforming the babies is the most horrible thing ive ever seen. Individual soldiers torturing is sick but is a one off one would hope. But what happened to these babies is a result of us firing uranium shells into Iraq shows our governments are complicit in the most horrid acts human's are capable of |

I saw the images on CBS' 60 Minutes II last week, and I was mortified. This is the first I've seen of the others, those not on the program.
My first reaction was feeling sorry I looked, because the tears came rough and ready. I, as a human being, am ashamed such things could happen.
Moreover, the governments' reactions, both British and American, is unnerving and disgusting. I've heard/read more than one person in charge say the following: "If this is true...." Hel-flipping-lo! There's pictures. How much more proof do they need?
I am not, by nature, a compulsive e-mail forwarder, but I will make sure the URL makes its way to everyone in my address book.
And, better yet, I will be particularly pleased to send it to one former classmate, friend, recently returned to the U.S. from Iraq.
Oh! Can I tell you! She would send these horrendous emials, crying about all sorts of nonsensical things. Her worst was how the troops were getting sick because "those dirty Iraqis" were cooking their meals. When I suggested they might be dirty because they didn't have WATER, she asked me not to contact her anymore. But youbetcha I will - right now.
And to think she was so worried what would happen to her if she were to be captured. Where's the screaming emoticon? I need one and I can't find it.

I only read it for Dear Deidre but you can find a decent story every once in a while. |

And here's an update from the BBC covering claims that the photos are indeed real: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3679177.stm
Guess we won't know until Jack Straw's 'High-Level Investigation' is done. Mind you, their record on Iraq so far is somewhat less than glowing.
What I find odd about the claims that the uniforms and weapons are wrong is that the photos originated from British soldiers - you'd think they'd have access to the real thing. |

Stories like these - and there were Congo, Rwanda, Nicaragua, the Falklands before - make me wonder whether the "victors" of WWII had any right to exact the price they exacted from ex-Nazi Germany.
Clearly, they are of no better moral fibre than their former enemies! |

I don't follow the reasoning here. Are you saying because man's inhumanity to man is so universal, no one has the "right" to punish anyone else for engaging in atrocities?
Regards.
