Me again. I had to break up with my prospective employer--turns out if you search for "BSK" instead of "Pacican" you find out they're massively sketchy. I just talked with someone at Happy Goal, and though the hours suck, it pays 10,500 and a 4,000 housing allowance (which was much better than BSK would have given me). I tried looking for them on here, and googling "Happy Goal" with "eslcafe," but I'm not finding any threads. Does anyone know anything? Coming down to the wire... |

Also: Every Shanghai company I've talked to so far has asked me to come over on a tourist visa. Quoth one visa expert:
"Because you come from USA,it's native speaker english country, shanghai govrnment could turn tourist visa to work visa directly,so i want to you come to china with tourist visa."
Is this, in fact, correct? |

It appears "Happy Goal" is affiliated with Web and focuses on kids.

Yeah, I know. The last part is actually a plus for me--I really like kids. Just wondering about staff satisfaction, etc. |

I work for Web and came over on a tourist visa and they did in fact turn it into a Z work visa.
Maybe it isn't supposed to happen but it did. |

How were they as an employer? (Although I'm sure it varies from branch to branch.) |

I've worked for several, and they vary enormously from branch-to-branch. In my experience, WEBs range from quite decent to horrible.
The first WEB I worked for handled the transition from L-visa to Z-visa very professionally. Never any problems with pay, etc.
Shanghai was a bit patchier. They botched the timing of my Z-visa application--meaning I had to get my L-visa extended--and dumped the cost of this on me. I only learned much later that such extensions are a black mark on your record and can cause you big problems when applying for future visas.
Just the same, facilities, teaching materials, and salary were ok with WEB Shanghai. Just keep track of what they are doing every step of the way with visas, banking, housing allowance, and all that. |
