Various Islamic countries vary in their degree of separation.
Is it because the men will attack a lady in public if not protected? Or is it that the men worry she will run down the street and have a round with the neighbor?
It just seems so extreme here. |

They do it because it's their custom. If you break the local taboos, people will be offended. Here's a question for you: Do western men force their women to cover their *beep* because they're afraid they'll be raped? Or because they're afraid it means she wants to sleep with the neighbor? |

Keep in mind what you're talking about occurs in all cultures, so there has to be a fairly substantial reason that transcends any one culture or religion. |

Controlling women makes the male more substantial in the eyes of other males. If a Saudi male fails to dominate his wife and children, lots of luck for him. It's a mean society. |

That describes some western men as well but definitely not all Saudi men.
Regardless, sex segregation is mandated to protect women. |

I can't tell you how many Arab men have told me... and they seem to actually believe it, poor deluded souls... that it is to protect them from the women that they are taught are the sexually aggressive sex who will attack any man that they are left alone in a room with...
They seemed to be offended when I couldn't stop laughing... (in your dreams boy...)
They looked at it as a protection from the possibility of sin.

However, considering that Saudi women tend to be more efficient and active than their male counterparts... |

Future members of the Haia. I wonder if they ever partake in any real perverse behavior like self-castration or something. |

Then we'd be expected to earn our outrageously high salaries. |

Separation of the sexes is the same as separation of the races. It's about having social control over people who are thought of as inferior or subhuman. Gender Apartheid plain and simple. I haven't seen any of this famous Islamic respect for women so far, but I'm new here. Last weekend, I was harassed by a young Saudi guy at 9 in the morning in front of my apartment inside the Medical City. He couldn't have thought I was a working girl in that place at that time of day, he just wanted to mess with me and feel powerful. He wouldn't leave so I took out my phone and acted like I was videoing him and then he drove away like a frightened little boy. I was too nervous so I wasn't able to really video him. Nobody was around and the security guard of my building wasn't where he should be. So much for protecting women. Anyway they are only protecting us from themselves like the mafia asks for protection money and then beats you up if you don't pay them. That's my vent for today! |
