Offered contract...but salary is only 1000 USD per month... I have been told that is insultingly low for my skills and qualifications. I feel uncomfortable asking for more...because we generally don't negotiate anything in the US. I was hoping for tactful suggestions. I want to be culturally sensitive..but do not want to convey myself as vulnerable or naive... Thoughts?... She is waiting on my reply... |

With the exception of government jobs (which would include working for the public education system), I haven't had any jobs in the US which I DIDN'T negotiate.
Tell them that you like the position and would enjoy living in Poland but without a reasonable salary you are going to have to say "NO".
My advice is to tell her that you have talked with several other teachers in Poland and no one believes this is a reasonable salary for someone with your qualifications. Mention that this included teachers in smaller cities and towns, not just Warsaw.
If she asks you what you believe is a good salary figure, be ready with the $1500/month mark and remember to make everything contingent on full support for your work and residence paperwork. If she meets you halfway and their contract (you have reviewed it, right?) pays for shared accommodations and you are not out-of-pocket more than food, entertainment and maybe wi-fi, then I'd say go for it if you want it.
Good Luck! |
