Is a national FBI check required for China as it is in some other Asian countries? Or is a state check sufficient? |

You're gonna get a bunch of answers, ranging from "you don't need ANY CBC" to "yes", "no", "maybe", "depends on the place", "depends on the place's connections", etc., etc., ad infinitum (ad nauseum).
Welcome to China. |

Yep, my FBI background which is 5 months old, I was told was "stale" (South Korea and Saudi Arabia accept FBI Background checks up and until 6 months after they were issued), but my company was able to get a work permit (I should note that we are still waiting for the letter of invitation) with just a criminal background check from the county sheriff's office (I was able to get it instantly for $5 USD), even though that CBC is only for one county (there are 3,077 counties in the United States, meaning I could have a criminal record in all 3,076 other counties in the U.S., but I have was able to find the one county I have not been arrested or incarcerated in).
If you have the time I would recommend getting an FBI check. Also, I know for a fact that Saudi Arabia and South Korea require and only accept FBI checks (or whatever your countries national equivalent is). Also, if it has been recently issued, you will know for sure that it will be accepted in China, and if you are interested in working in other countries you will have a wider scope. An FBI check is not that expensive, it is $18 a copy plus the finger print service and postage. The only issue is the amount of time it takes. I can't remember exactly when I mailed the paperwork last winter, but it took at least 4 if not 6 weeks to get it back. Also, unfortunately, there is no way that I know of to expedite the fingerprint service. There are no private services, or places you can walk in and get it done instantly. |
