|
|
Hundreds of tons of contaminated water are now leaking from the Fukushima plant into the sea every day.
Here's the BBC video, in which you see TEPCO announcing, "That's it. We give up. There's nothing more we can do." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-23584008. A day or two later, TEPCO revealed that they had, in effect, already been dumping contaminated water into the sea for some time.
Well, that's the latest from Yahoo! News, as my wife described it to me. But please don't take my word for it: sometimes things get lost in translation between us.
If it's true, I suspect that they chose to reveal it now because the aquifer is becoming so sodden that springs of contaminated water are due to appear any day now. It will soon be obvious to anyone with a long lens what's going on. |

Follow up:
I've made a few enquiries, and I found a little background information. Nothing that will be a surprise to anyone who knows how Japan works, but interesting all the same. I have to protect my source's identity, but I consider him very credible. He works for a company that (among other things) provides consultative services to the nuclear industry. When I asked him about the news from Fukushima, he told me, "That's old news to me. TEPCO have been panicking about this for 6 months."
I'd also like to draw your attention to this article:
At Fukushima, Fear of a Losing Battle, Wall Street Journal, 7th August 2013. Here's a "good news" quote:
Quote: |
local fishery cooperatives ... June of last year have been catching octopus and other sea life that consistently test low for radiation |
We have to treat this with a little skepticism, of course, but I'm sure the likes of manipani will ring the alarm bells loud and clear if any hard evidence comes to light of dangers to human health.
And here's a "worst case scenario" quote:
Quote: |
But there is a risk to changing the flow of groundwater in the ways that Tepco is considering, said Tatsuya Shinkawa, nuclear-accident-response director of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, at a news conference last month. The water could pool dangerously underground, softening the earth and potentially toppling the reactor buildings, he said. |
EDIT: Removed reference's to manipani's posts, because they were deleted

Even best case scenario, this will ultimately cost japan 10s of billions of $ to clean up |

If you keep up the petty arguments and bickering, you will have to find another venue to continue such behavior.
Members should advise the Mod Team if the above warning is violated. |
