I see that AUS is hiring teachers for their prep year program. Is this a good job or a lousy one? Are there any current or former employees out there who can comment?

There's good info on AUS; do a search on them within this forum. It's also a smart idea toread up on the Achievement Academy on the university's website.

It is super competitive because IMHO (and many agree with me) it is the best university in the Gulf and the best employer - especially for Americans. For every 10 teachers I know that have applied and/or interviewed, perhaps one gets an offer. The pay and benefits have consistently been tops for university level... in the Gulf.

I know teachers who have taught there over the years, and have never heard a complaint. Nor have there been any complaints posted here. Every teacher that I know that has been hired there had significant years of Gulf teaching on their CVs...

AUS is a good teaching gig. It`s established and has a diverse, international student body. It`s also co-ed, which makes it look and feel more like the colleges most of us attended. Based on a few idle conversations with AUS staff and spouses there seems to be less turmoil than in the HCT system. If you`re American, you`ll have Social Security deducted from your salary.

This is very useful for the long term expats, helping to move us up the scale on this marginal pension system, but basically the only thing we have as a safety net. (and give us eligibility for Medicare) They also provide access to the common American private teacher pension plan TIAA-CREF... or at least they did last time I read their benefits list.

Yes, it is. As an American hoping to get out of Thailand eventually, I would like to also have this option if I were to be hired at an American satellite campus there. I wonder if this is standard, however.

Sadly not... in fact, AUS may be the only institution in the Gulf that I know does it. The American University in Cairo does the same, but I haven't heard of any others.

Perhaps some of the smaller places in Qatar that mostly bring teachers in from their US campus. Perhaps Houston CCQ? You'll have to do some research to see what you can find.

The American University of Sharjah de-incorporated from the US several years ago. Concomitant with that move, the institution no longer pays into US Social Security .

I have no idea what "de-incorporated" means. For some years AU in Washington DC had a management contract with them... presumably you mean when that ended? Not sure what you mean by "several years" but it hasn't been that long since I read about it on their website... 2-3 years? It seems to have been all replaced by a "defined benefit package" which makes more sense with an international faculty.

Too bad... it was nice for Americans to get to pay into the SS system.
