|
|
In typical fashion, EdEx is hanging out the 90 day visa workers to dry. Everyone's has to be out of the country by July 3rd, and you are supposed to trust them to get you out on that date. A day when tens of thousands are supposed to leave. If you leave early, according to EdEx, you are resigning. And according to them, you give up your end of contract bonus and have to buy your own ticket.
And since there is quite a rush out, they will more than likely cheat you any other way they can, too. They will short your pay, simply not pay you, etc... What can you do? You HAVE to by out by July 3rd. Uncle Bill is nothing but a disgraced drunk and the Gorilla is a pathological liar and thief. EdEx is one of the absolutely worst employers in the ME.
Beware the *beep* going out the door! |

Same deal every year, they just change the method to catch you off guard. Grab what you can and run now. Edex is doing that with the money they get from the unis. At least they can't force you to stay through the summer if they have to get you out by July 3rd. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this special clean out doesn't happen every year, right? There isn't normally an annual event that makes it impossible to complete a 1-year contract on a series of 90-day 'business' visas. |

The days of working on 90 day visas are finished. From September you should come over on an iqama. They seem to be really enforcing this big time. Immigration in Riyadh has thousands of people waiting outside in the streets right now. |

I'm really getting the feeling that Saudi Arabia knows they pay the best, and therefore requires the most formal set of qualifications. There is no free lunch--if you want that offer, get the qualifications. Teachers trying to slide through the cracks, and the companies that have been facilitating them, are swimming against a current that is flowing with increasing strength. Sooner or later (and these days, 'sooner' seems much more likely), those trying to frustrate the stated aims of the Saudi government are going to get burned badly for it with a consistency heretofore unseen. |

I think you may be giving the Saudis way too much credit. They do pay the best, but I don't think they are that "slick". It is just a huge cluster fuc*. Teachers only make up a fraction of the total amount of "guest workers" over here. |

I guess that might be a good thing this year, because Edex may actually be forced to give these teachers a ticket home this year. In the past, they didn't give non-returning teachers the ticket home, except for one or two teachers that actually stayed through the whole summer. Even then it was difficult for them to collect. Wonder if the teachers being booted on July 3rd will get their full vacation pay? Not. |

true enough... did I read somewhere that there are something like 8 million foreign workers in Saudi? |

I agree. The government is trying to get a handle on immigration as there are many illegals working in KSA. These illegals largely reflect the country's inconsistent policies which have historically encouraged corrupt recruiters, unprincipled sponsors, and not a few unscrupulous workers. Unfortunately, in characteristic fashion, Immigration staff are probably overgeneralizing with what they locally believe their "tough" new policy to be (there probably isn't one) and, again as usual, are undoubtedly shooting themselves in the foot. |

So, I'm curious, what's the latest? Will people who have to leave be paid before the deadline, will they get full vacation pay, will they get tickets home? Has anyone actually received anything yet? |

To the best of my knowledge, people are leaving. They have, of course, tried to rip teachers off. But most seem to be getting paid what they are owed. The 3rd approaches. |

If this company is so bad, how come they're still advertising and STILL getting teachers to come over? Is there such a thing as a 'good' recruiter anywhere in the world? No! They are out to make money and that's it!
In the end teachers have to make their own decisions and go by their own instincts. Money is good, but with it comes negativity It's a job-good/or bad; everyone has to have one, to pay the bills. Put up with the nonsense and save... |

With the deadline being delayed, I wondered if anyone got screwed on airline tickets? |

Because so many leave that they always need teachers? Bad companies don't stop advertising because they are bad... they advertise more.

... because there are plenty of people who are desperate enough to accept a job with them even after reading all the negatives. That is also a constant in Saudi where so many of these places are not as strict about CVs...

My advice is to wait it out. It's their responsibility to get you out on time and if they don't, you can always go to the Ministry of Labor and report them. That's what a lot of teachers did when I was there working for ICEAT. One of them got totally screwed - fired for no reason - and she was told she had to leave the next day all at her expense. She didn't and 5 months later she got all her pay from when she was fired and not working, all the fines paid for her missing her 'get out' date and I believe some compensation/hardship money. The companies will tell you what they want you to believe so you have to use your head. I wouldn't take matters into my own hands leave on my own. That's just what they are hoping for. I'd just be patient, not yell or get aggressive, try to smile and just stick it out. In my experience, this is how you get what you want in Saudi. |
