I have read, some older, posts on Yanbul Industrial College and would like to ask what things are like now.
Have there been any further attacks in the region targeting westerners?
And, from what I have read, the management has seemed to be more based upon 'who likes who' and not who can do the job well.
One poster wrote about being stoned and spat upon while on his journey to work. Are things really this bad?
A couple have also posted on how difficult it is to leave the country if there are any disagreements between management and staff - I wouldn't want to be stuck in a position where I am openly disliked and shunned and not being able to leave. |

Wherever you are, I'd suggest you stay wrapped up in your ball of cotton wool. |

I've visited the place a number of times in the last few years. Really good management with a great attitude to PD and lots of support for staff who wish to present at national and regional conferences. Yanbu itself is sleepy, but there haven't been any serious incidents in years. The coast is great for diving, there are several nice international hotels for eating out, and an all-important Al Baik for the finest fried chicken in Arabia
You could do a hell of a lot worse in KSA than a year or two in Yanbu. |

Thank you so much, that puts a lot of fears to rest - much appreciated. |

You can shut these two up by going in and editing the title of the thread. You can't be surprised that a group which consists of a bunch of language teachers will zing you for making two errors in the title. We can't help it sometimes.
If you hit the edit button in the upper right corner of your original post up there, you can correct both typos.

Thank you, Veiledsentiments - as I'm too lazy and as I am also prone to making mistakes I'll just leave it. I don't think the mistakes to be such as ineligible. Anyway, Yabnu[l] was just a place name mistake, I added an,l, not realising the proper name to be without it. As for industrail, I guess sometimes my fingers, brain, are ahead or behind me.
One thing that annoyed me, for years, was having to unlearn the sounds I used for 'e' and 'i' (i:, ai) in English as they are reversed in the Finnish language. When I had mastered it I found my writing skills in English had seemingly diminished as I began to write 'their' as 'thier' and other similar words. I was doing this unconsciously for quite a while until people started to comment on this small but very noticeable mistake and I had to learn again. |

I just read about your KAAU-ELI experience. It is regrettable as that, considering the negatives, you were rejected as it seems MUCH better than NIT or YIC. It seems as if you are "settling".
Let me tell you right now, Saudi is NOT the place to "settle", unless, like Scot, you "settle" for KFUPM. I turned them down, but ONLY for a better gig.
Now, that being said, the quote above does you a disservice.
Remember, Charity begins at home...and if YOU can't be bothered, why should your charges? |

Sorry, DLIguy, I misunderstood your post, I have been up for 30 hours straight. Yes, I have had a string of bad luck (reads unprofessional schools across three countries) that have cost me quite a bit of money and time. To be honest, I need the money now.
I have just got an offer in Qatar and I will probably head out there for a year. I just hope I can manage the management practices there too.
Thanks for your input.

Gee... I thought that was a pretty positive post for DLIguy. I could be wrong, but I think he was trying to be nice... and perhaps even helpful after being such a nitpicker above.
Interesting about your experience with ie/ei - which even native speakers have a problem with to be honest. It's hard enough without your first language doing things the opposite way.
