As a regular reader of the jobs pages, I've noticed the growing trend to offer absolutely terrible deals for work in war zones. The offers coming out of Libya, a country which I know a lot about, are absolutely insane. Twenty odd thousand pounds to live and work here as a deal is simply atrocious as it's expensive and dangerous these days. Similarly Language Solutions are offering $3,500 amonth to work in Basra, Iraq on a contract I was offered $15,000 a month to do not so long ago. The same company is offering 27K to work in Zawia, a tiny coastal, Libyan village. It's simply appalling. Furthermore, these jobs, which should always be rotations are full-time with one annual return ticket. I'm disgusted by such callous offers. I advise everyone to boycott these positions. The only people they will recruit are nutters and idiots. You have been warned. These places are not fun, not exciting and not worth it. However, my job is ok Smile.

I would imagine these ads attract those who are new to the profession and don't know the market rates and/or some more 'seasoned' teachers who have burned bridges elsewhere. I agree with you that these ads should be ignored.

There's a gig going in Ras Lanuff (Libya) right now...under 30k GBP on an 8 and 2 rotation...I advise anyone to Google Image Ras Lanuff.....it's a refinery on the edge of the desert...not a single shop or dwelling...just a refinery and export terminal. Dreadful...should be 28/28. These Libyans have to learn.

Nothing new in these ads. Back in the 1990s, a few ESL teachers were stranded in their airplane, having touched down in Kuwait just as Saddam H was invading...

Now with 24/7 news coverage, there's absolutely no excuse not to find out what's going on on the ground.

I timed it perfectly yesterday, and opened the Jobs board on this forum at the time when the top three were jobs in Cairo, the West Bank and Iraq.

They have moved down the page a bit now.

I think the best example of a cheeky offer to employ people in a war-zone I have ever seen was about eight years ago. The British Council offered its teachers the chance to do two weeks work in Afghanistan. They wanted people to do this instead of taking their paid holiday, for no extra money apart from expenses.

As a sweetener, the promise of being driven to work in an armoured car was thrown in.
