I want to stick up some adverts for English classes on some of the many notice boards in my suburban neighborhood. For example with a cheesy little picture of me, thumbs up, a winning smile, saying "Call Tom for cheap English lessons", etc etc.
Is this legit? Has anyone tried it? I'm really up for the idea of teaching affordable lessons if it's within walking distance of my place. |

It may be legit, but it's a crappy business strategy. If you offer cheap lessons, you'll get cheap customers who have no respect for you.
Develop an aura or quality and professionalism, and double your rates. |

Well I wouldn't really make something as tacky as that, obviously. I am more concerned with the legality and effectiveness of placing notices on these prefecture boards - this being to attract people literally within a mile of my apartment, for whom I would consider teaching lessons at a cheaper rate. (I'm not so sure there isn't a market for a little informality, anyway. Adverts for English tuition in Tokyo are dominated by the oppressively business-oriented formality of the big chains, like those COCO Juku "communicating competence" posters, with all their posterity and jargon, which might lead any sane Japanese to believe that the only people who bother to learn English are prospective wankers). I like teaching kids, too. |
