It's still wise to research the employer even in direct-hire situations.

Bumping this thread since the major recruiting/hiring period for direct-hire university opportunities for the upcoming academic year begins in the next couple of months.

The Saudi companies don't want to prevent Midnight Running for the benefit of their dear workers who are left behind. It's only to make money off of those who are desperate enough to consider running and recoup costs off of those who have already run.

Plumpy:

So as not to confuse others, this thread is about direct-hire employers and not about working for contracting companies.

A couple of additional points about direct-hire opportunities:

CALCULATING SALARY: Many university employers calculate salary based on the applicant's verified years of professional experience, which is why job ads for direct-hire positions generally don't indicate salary. Applicants are to provide signed employment certificates or letters (on letterhead) from each previous employer stating the applicant's employment start and end dates, job title, and optionally, salary and responsibilities. Each letter/employment cert should also include the employer representative's job title and contact info. Experience gained via self-employment (e.g., teaching private lessons) won't be factored into salary. However, verified, non-teaching work experience could receive partial credit toward salary calculations. (This was my situation as a career changer.)

Additionally, salaries are capped regardless of the number of years of experience. For example, someone with 10+ years of experience would receive around the same monthly pay as an equally-qualified colleague with half that experience.

ONLINE DEGREES: Depending on the university/employer, masters degrees that fulfill the academic requirement but were obtained by online/distance learning (even from accredited, bricks-n-mortar universities) may or may not be accepted. Private universities are likely to be flexible with this requirement compared to government unis which are under tight Ministry of Higher Ed regulations. Of course, things could change... or not. Confused

Of my 5 employers in the Middle East, only one counted non-education experience for even partial credit. That was AUCairo... none in the Gulf.

(OK... carry on Sasha and Scot)

KAU also gives partial credit for certain non-teaching positions. In my case, I was given credit (six months for every year worked) for the two writing positions I held.

Moreover, confirmation of previous employment is the responsibility of the job candidate and not the new employer; it's not enough to simply provide the contact info of past employers. This can come as a big uh-oh to applicants who, for whatever reasons, didn't obtain documentation from each former employer, especially if they have significant relevant experience. Something to keep in mind before leaving that last job.
