Hi,
I'm a Canadian and am working in Korea now with my fiancee who is Moroccan. He is not a teacher and English is not his first language. I would like to teach in Japan next year after I get married. My fiancee has a friend who has a restaurant there who would like him to work. I just wonder if it is possible to get a working visa?
Has anyone taught in Japan with a spouse who was not a teacher? |

If you have a proper working visa he can get a dependents visa which will allow him to work part time (spouse visa is for those married to Japanese nationals). He will have to apply for permission to work on the dependents visa . As far as I know restaurant work is permissible on the dependents visa.His best bet is to try and get the relevant work visa if he has experience and his employer is willing to sponsor his work visa. |

Is it easier to come in on a dependants visa first and then apply for a work visa, or should he go for the work visa right away? If he applies for a work visa is he likely to be granted one? I've heard that it is difficult for foreigners (other than EFL teachers) to get working visas in Japan. Obviously I don't want to be separated from my husband and I'm pretty sure that he won't be happy not being able to work.
I really appreciate all your advice.  |

You had best apply for a dependents visa for him and then when he lines a job up with a sponsor then he can apply for a change of status to a work visa. If he comes on a tourist visa he is not supposed to work and there is a chance he may not find a job by the time his visa is up. He may be able to switch to a dependent visa from a tourist visa but you had best check with the consulate as to what his options are.
If he has a friend in Tokyo who can offer him work and they can supply paperwork to immigration there should be no problems getting a work visa, if they agree to hire him full time.
"Likely" depends on many factors such as his skills, how employable he is, and whether he is qualified for that position. He amy need to know some Japanese as well. I can only guess without knowing more information.
Dependent visa he can only work part time and there are tax issues (affecting you as you would pay more in tax) if he earns over a certain amount per month on a DV. |

Thanks so much for your advice it really helps in making plans for the future.
I think we will definately give Japan a try but maybe we will do one more year in Korea first just to save up some extra money to cover the startup costs and give us plenty of time to sort through the paper work. |

My wife worked, in early childhood education, without asking anyone permission. The only thing we had to be careful of was not exceeding her annual income limit which we did do once and got hammered for tax.
Shouldn't be a problem as long as you stay within the limit which was, a few years ago, 1,100,000 yen per annum. |
