A friend coming to Japan to visit wants to know if he can buy a sim card. Do you know the answer? I have no idea. |

No he can't. Even pre-pay SIMs need a contract, which needs a long term visa. However he could hire a cell
phone while he is here. There are lots of companies that offer that service if you google it, but it's not cheap. |

There's a company called bmobile through which you can get a prepaid SIM for data use (either 1GB or 14 days) which has gotten good reviews. The 1GB flavor version was recently touted by Mark Frauenfelder on Boing-Boing. He used it with a smartphone and made calls using Skype.
