Just musing to myself here, so pay no attention. A thought struck me. I remember a colleague of mine chuckling away to himself while he was telling an EFL story. It was about how a group of students in a school he worked with had all somehow managed to pick up elements of the accent of their teacher, who was from Glasgow or Belfast somewhere.

My question, I suppose, is why this should be funny. I mean, I agree, it can be fuuny to see exotic foreign students speaking English with a broad accent from somewhere off the beaten track. I am as guilty as anyone. But doesn't this really reveal how we ourselves condescendingly view the native speakers with these accents? Which is why the notion of them teaching students and hearing the students' resulting accent comes across as amusing, isn't it? Coz, like our accents are just perfect...

Ah, I need another drink today... Cannot write coherently...

What do posters think of these clips, anyway?

Dear Sasha,

Sorry, could you repeat that? I wasn't paying attention.

Regards,
John

Dear Johnslat

Ssshhh! I am having a ramble. I'm in the cathedral of my mind. Lofty spires. Domed transepts. Frescoes depicting my glory. Hummm? What?

Best wishes

Dreamy Sasha

Nah, didn't miss much.😎

I had that situation with a HK student who had picked up a Texan accent from her US company. I never did ask if it affected her Cantonese too, but it doesn't seem likely.

If press reports are to be believed, Uday Hussein never lost the fairly heavy Yorkshire accent he picked up from his English teacher at school.

Doubt too many people scoffed at him for it though:
