Also known as the "clean" criminal background check. This is apparently now necessary for foreign teachers in Beijing, Shenzhen, Changsha and some other cities.

My question is: does it have to be completely clean? I have a DUI from about ten years ago on my record, which was not even considered a crime in China until 2011. Are these criminal background checks absolute or is there some wriggle room for (fairly) minor offenses? Has anyone else experienced any problems on the criminal background check compliance?

Is it a crime if the party requesting the confirmation party did not consider it a crime when it happened?

As I understand it from our international office "no wiggle room". Record must be clean from the age of 18.

Joe,

Was the DUI in the U.S.?

If so, were you required to attend DUI classes as part of your behavioral modification? Were there any other compounding circumstances such as wreckless driving, speeding, a child in the car, etc? Did you go to jail? If not, that offense may have been recorded as a moving violation.

To be sure, go online and look for a local DUI lawyer. There's one in my city. There may be one in yours. In some states, DUI's are automatically expunged after several years as long as there have been no repeat episodes. You can always talk directly with a DUI lawyer about it and take steps toward expungement. DUI law is a growing legal area.

MOD EDIT

Promoting, discussing or encouraging the use of fake degrees or other documents on this board is one of the quickest ways of receiving a permanent ban.

This has been board policy since its inception and I wouldn't bet the farm on it changing in the present or future.

Yes. Some places require DUI/DWI offenders to attend classes for a few weeks in order to get their permanent licenses back and to avoid an even stiffer fine and/or jail time. Some cities and states may determine that the person is an alcoholic and remand him to a substance abuse program before allowing him to drive again.

The term "behavioral modification" was my choice of words, but that's the intent of the various programs. Some people never change, though, no matter what happens. Recently, I read of someone who got so many DUI's that he was sentenced to twenty years in jail. My home town has a "Booze It and Lose It [license]" program. It's in the Bible belt.

It does sound depressing that China is starting to ask for criminal record checks. It's not because I want to encourage criminals-far from it. But it's an added layer of bureaucracy and cost, on top of the exhaustive battery of medical tests I had to undergo before I got to China. It suggests that the Chinese are less enthusiastic about English. Of course I am now in Korea, which requires much MORE bureaucracy than this.

As a UK citizen, the police check wasn't costly at 10 quid, but took over a month - so apply for it early. http://www.acro.police.uk/subject_access.aspx

The pre-China medical, however, can be much more costly because the NHS (rightly) will not freely undertake tests which are not seen as medically required for the sake of the patient's health (but a requirement for the patient's visa). The (BG-14) Foreigner Physical Examination Form can be downloaded from: http://isc.bit.edu.cn/show.aspx?id=134&cid=67

I was prepared to jump through the required hoops, but I envisage many would perhaps not bother, and teach elsewhere in China/the world (with less hoop-jumping requirements?). The pre-China medical doesn't make sense to me when there's the in-China medical also, but TIC (This is China) and so no point in my moaning about it beyond this site.
