Are there a lot of language institutes that are geared towards adults in Japan? Like Berlitz, Quick Learning, or Harmon Hall types? Does one get a lot of hours at such places or would working for the public school system be better? |

Depends. You want vacation? Berlitz would have less.
Probably Berlitz would pay better than being an ALT. |

I've never heard of Quick Learning or Harmon Hall.
What country are you in where these eikaiwa are found? As far as I know, they do not exist in Japan.
I've heard of Berlitz and they can be found near most of the large stations in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and I think even Fukuoka (not sure, though). I've seen one in Shinjuku Nishi-guchi near the Post Office / Starbucks. Maybe you could go in and talk to them, if you're in the area.
My guess is that Berlitz would be the way to go vs GCommunications / NOVA, GABBA and AEON. I think ECC is supposed to be also a better than most place to work.
I've known people who've worked for all of the above and they mostly hated them and complained. Eikaiwa is hard life.
Hey, if you're a ProfessionalTEFL'er, then you should be aiming for an ALT position and if you're really qualified a university teaching job. |

Lots of "language institutes" aka "eikaiwa" in Japan. Solar Strength mention some of the big ones. It's a big business. Look around on the job boards here at Dave's, Gaijin Pot, Ohayousensei, and you can see what is available. These are entry level jobs, get you in the country, sponsor your visa, get your feet on the ground. From there you can network and plan your escape.
Lots of other types of teaching jobs here. Some outfits farm us out to Japanese companies for business English lessons. Some to public schools as ALT's to play with the kids. There is a Japanese government program called JET that ships foreigners here as ALTs. Sweet deal if you can get it. Real, accredited teachers can find work at international schools. If you have a Masters and publications you can try for University spots.
In general, business is tough. Wages are falling and there is steep competition for even the ECC, AEON, NOVA entry level jobs. Getting better gigs than that takes time, connections, work and luck. |
