Hi all,

First post here... my situation is that I have two interviews - one with ECC and the other UIC (i.e. Shane Schools) - both in the Tokyo district. I've read up about the eikaiwa situation and it seems to very from the worst possible idea ever to a really rewarding way into a working life in Japan (if anyone wants to add to this I'd be interested to hear your advice!).

I suppose my main question would be that, between Shane and ECC, are there big differences? I see that the base rate of pay is the same although I think EEC have a two week training whereas Shane only provide one. I have an interview with one agency first, so assuming I got that position, I think I'd have to take it, unless of course the other agency was superior to the extent that it would be worth turning it down and then risking another interview. Any experiences, suggestions? Are they substantially different schools?

I have a CELTA, experience teaching various age groups and I'm not too phased by stuff like poor management or broken photocopiers (though its still annoying!). Most of the stuff I've found about Shane is pretty negative but I take internet rants with a bucket of salt and besides, all the posts are dated around 2007/08. I wonder if things have changed since then?

This is not a career move for me but a means to live amongst Japanese culture and meet Japanese people. I'm not a live to work type person but I don't mind a challenge so long as I feel I'm being paid well and treated well my management and most of all, that I feel the students aren't being exploited or mistreated. I was also looking at Interac but began to feel a bit lost at all the possibilities! So any suggestions or advice on any of these subjects would be vastly appreciated! I

There are other TEFL destinations, don't get so set on Japan.

Where's Glenski these days, he'd be all over a post like this normally.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but I've heard of shady dealings with Shane. If you can get ECC take that one. I know that ECC also pays either 252,000 or 253,000 for full time and I've heard pretty good things about it.

One can teach TELF anywhere in the world but one cannot live in Japan anywhere in the world.

If anyone has any recent direct experience they could share beyond the anecdotal that would be fantastic.
