Would I need to be in my home country to get a work visa in Japan? I'm currently working in China but I would like to consider Japan in the future. If I was to be offered a job in Japan that would provide visa sponsorship, would I need to go back to my home country to get it or could I do it in China?

I had my visa processed and COE issued by a Japanese consulate in a 3rd country, (although it wasn't China). I didn't have to go back to my home country.

From what I know, so long as there is a Japanese consulate in the country, it should be able to handle visa-related matters. Give them a call when the time comes. They will specify all the documentation you'll need. I hope this helps!

It was a couple of years ago, as far as I am aware it hasn't changed.
