Hey everyone!

I have been working in China for the past two years. I have had a great experience and great jobs, but for personal reasons I think it is time for me to move on to a different place.

I would like to know what I can expect in terms of working hours, pay, and lifestyle in different countries. (most jobs in China consider 24-28 hrs full-time positions. Is that true everywhere?)

I have a bachelor's degree in Chinese. I also have two years teaching experience. I am planning to get a TESOl certificate, probably CELTA.

In China I worked 2 jobs. One university job teaching Graduate students oral English. My university job was 16 hours a week. I also worked in a kindergarten for 8 hrs a week. Both jobs were very laid back and I only worked 24 hrs a week total. Outside of teaching I didn't have any other work responsibilities. In total I made 10,000 rmb (1,600 USD) a month, and I could easily save 5500 rmb (900 USD) a month. I had a very comfortable and easy-going lifestyle, lots of free time and lots of fun things to do.

I am looking for a place where I can save a little bit of money at least 500 USD a month. I'm pretty good at keeping a budget and don't need a lot of money to be comfortable. Also I want to keep my working hours down, 35 hrs or lower. ( I would rather have 2 part time jobs that total 30 hrs than 1 full-time that runs 40+ hrs.) It's important that I can enjoy life outside of work. Smile
I am considering Thailand and Korea. Anyone have any opinions or other ideas?
Thanks,

Quality of life depends on you! Smile My choice would be the Middle East but a young person with no family in tow would probably consider that hell. What do you consider 'fun'? Recreation? Drinking? Parties? Surfing?

There are hundreds of countries, so are you only interested in Asia?

That's not the case for the UAE and possibly Oman. But we have to keep in mind the OP's unrelated BA + 2 years experience and lack of a TEFL cert---quals that aren't enough to get the OP an entry-level job in those countries.

Plenty of legal taxis. Plenty of unofficial ones too. Never stuck waiting.

In any case, not sure what that comment, or any of the others, has to do with anything. Let's talk about taxis to airports! That always works out well, eh, GA?

Here's another nice dream!

Imagine that you worked for an evil intelligence agency and wanted to disclose information about a multiplicity of crimes carried out by that agency. Where would you then escape to after you had alerted the world to the baseness of said agency? After having exposed the hypocrisy of its empty rhetoric about individual freedom, eh?

Welcome to Russia! Where the People will protect you from vindictive, global bully organisations which are enraged after having been caught with their pants down.

Russia! Land of the truly free! All welcome. Even EFL teachers : )

Now, rather than critiquing my offerings, let's hear your reasons for recommending Japan for the OP. I'll concede that you'll win on the 'having the highest radioactivity levels' category, which is a blow.

Dear Sasha,

"I'll concede that you'll win on the 'having the highest radioactivity levels' category, which is a blow".

Of course, it's not the USSR anymore, but remember Chernobyl?

Dear Johnslat

Yes, that was like a Ukrainian Three-Mile-Island.

But as you have already pointed out, and I didn't as the I felt it would have been redundant, we were talking about Russia and Japan. Actually, there has been very little offered by way of selling Japan to the OP. Just pernickity remarks about Russia.

But what's a little fallout between mates, eh?

Best wishes

Sasha

When I saw the thread title I was planning to post and suggest China. It could be hard to find a place you are able to enjoy so much TBH! If you find a place better, let me know too!
