According to Wikipedia, Vietnam has the second highest rate of human deaths from the rabies virus. I've been reading up on rabies, and it seems to be the most deadly disease on the planet. If contracted and not immediately treated, odds of survival are non-existent. With all of this considered, I'm curious how many foreign teachers in Vietnam have been vaccinated for rabies. Also, is it relatively cheap/easy to get vaccinations in the major cities? |

I doubt anyone who hasn't been attacked by an animal has been vaccinated for rabies. From what I understand, the vaccine isn't a one and done thing. You have to go in every 6 months or so to get another shot.
It also seems pointless. If someone is bitten by any animal, the standard procedure is to get treated for rabies. This usually involves some shots of immunoglobulin and then they give the vaccine as well. |

I think if you read a little more, you will find that the deadliest disease on the planet is not rabies but malaria which of course is present in Vietnam, particularly in the Mekong region. There is no vaccine but there is treatment.
Edited to change from most deadly to deadliest. I guess as English teachers we must emulate Caesar's wife. |

Perhaps that's true by numbers. But in terms of what's sure to kill you after you've contracted it, rabies is #1. Malaria can be treated once you show signs of having it. If you show signs of rabies, it's a guaranteed death sentence. |
