|
|
I'm skype interviewing with them in 2 days. Anyone know if they're reliable or no good or what?
Anybody know how expensive Changzhou is? compared to a cheap city like Changchun or Taishan or an expensive one like Shanghai or Dalian, say?
In Shandong province a taxi starts at 5.5 yuan. In Shanghai it's 15. That's usually a good way to figure how expensive a place is.
It looks pretty developed and touristy, so might beexpensive. I think the school offers about 6000 yuan and housing, which would barely do it in an expensive city (I like to save a lot).
Thanks |

Changzhou is a nice city but as it's part of that Shanghai-Suzhou-Wuxi-Nanjing corridor I expect you will find it more expensive than a comparable sized city in most other areas of China.
I'm not sure it's because of tourists though... the only things to see there are an (admittedly very impressive) temple/pagoda and a dinosaur theme park. Suzhou (and its water villages) and Nanjing suck up most of the tourism in that area. |

No, I wouldn't use taxi rates to gauge costs. There are too many variables. First off, if you are a foreigner they will want more unless you know how to talk them down. Some drivers wait for 2 or 3 more people to get in and then they divide the costs. If you use the highway, sometimes they contact another driver and meet them there. You have to get out and change taxi cars. Sometimes, the second driver will ask for more. They generally don't drive you specifically to where you want to go. For a long distance ride, this means you might need the bus when you get into town.
You should compare your salary to the costs of products in stores. Beijing and Shanghai might have more expensive places, but you can still find cheaper places. |

I live one hour away from Changzhou. Changzhou is one of my favorite cities in China. It is in an expensive part of Jiangsu in that triangle mentioned before. But, of that list, Changzhou is the least expensive. If you can get a free apartment, and a salary closer to 10k than not, plus some side work in this bigger than average city- you'll be o.k. |

I am also in the Shanghai - Nanjing corridor , and agree nowhere is as expensive as Shanghai , the other cities are much more liveable.
I visited the 'Nanchang' bar/restaurant street in Wuxi recently, and of course if you hang out in that type of place , you will burn through money . My city is not so touristy /ex-pat , so going out is much cheaper , and I think Changzhou will be the same. |

Tthe EF site doesn't list that city as having an EF, which makes me wonder...& they didn't talk salary. Their ad on Dave's disappeared. I think they offer 6K, which is impossible...
So many thanks re salar & cost of living.
As far as the price thing: it's purely "how much does a loaf of white bread cost in xyz? How much is the starting fare of a taxi?"
In Henan Prov. it was 5 for both, which is cheap & I could plan a bit. In Changzhou a loaf of white bread is 10 yuan and a taxi (first 3 km) are 9. That sounds more like Dalian, rather costly. ( I never take taxis & I bake my own bread... )
Wow. Even Wuxi is expensive!
Thanks again. |

Hi,
Found an ad about EF English First Changzhou. The pay is 6300/mo. with free apt. and 20 hrs. max. work....
In Dalian ft's made 4500/mo with free apt., which seems impossible.
I saved almost everything, though I did nothing but run and read and teach. Since I'm into saving money this year anyway, that would be OK.
What do you think? |

Not that simple alas though, luv. Maybe a loaf of bread is cheaper in Urumqi, but it's half the size therefore more expensive piece for piece. Yeah, the starting fare for taxis are cheaper in say Suzhou than Nanjing, but the distance covered for that fare in one is 2km, whilst in the other 3km. Likewise in many cases the starting fare is higher, but then when the minimum distance is covered the per kilometer rate is much lower in the latter city. You'd have to base the price on a set distance rate, for example how much does it cost to take a taxi for 10km in Changzhou as opposed to Linfen, ya know? |

Have you had recruiters do this to you lately? Bait and switch, Chinese ESL style...
So I wrote what I assumed was EF Changzhou asking for their website. Turns out, oh no, you must've forgotten. It's Web International Wuxi Kids Center-Happy Goal English. They also sent the employment facts, & will pay 8-9000 plus 1500 housing. That sounds OK, based on what you've said.
Many hours, but the photos look dandy, like a big spacious buxiban in Taiwan and now I guess on the mainland, too. Since I'm 65 in Jan. I guess it's OK.
Again, many thanks. |

"Even Wuxi?" Wuxi is called 'Little Shanghai' by many Chinese. Loads of inward investment, loads of multinationals based there (particularly big pharma companies) and its economic growth rates (until very recently) have been impressive even by China-on-steroids standards.
It is not surprisingly expensive for China, although it is a very pleasant city as well. |
