I wonder if anyone can help me to clarify this following question from the Westgate application... I have tried to get my head around what it is they want for an answer, but my head is beginning to hurt.

"In a sample class, you are using a dialogue to teach a situation context.
You are teaching clarification language. For example, Can you repeat that?
Can you create a 4 sentence dialogue between two people illustrating how to clarify a misunderstanding?"

any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

thanks, love from zorro.

Example

A: whats your phone number?

B: Its 090-XXXX-0906.

A: I m sorry I couldnt follow you. Could you say it one more time? Was that last number 0609 at the end?

B No 0-9-0-6. 090-XXXX-0906.

A: OK... so it's 090-XXXX-0-9-0-6.

B: Yes that's right.

thanks for that quick response paulh. so they just want the language used for clarification? perhaps i should clarify the intent with westgate by saying

"i'm sorry i don't understand what you require from me. can you give me an example...."

.

You used the word clarify to ask about Westgates request for the same thing. So you must know what the word 'clarify' means.

Examples of clarification

I dont understand you.
What did you say?
Can you repeat that for me.?
Can you use simpler language?
can you speak more slowly?
Can you say it in another way.
Can you express it in such a way i can understand more easily?

4 sentence dialogue- a conversation between two people of 4 lines (2 utterances each)

Cant really see what there isnt to understand here.

You want to get a job at Westgate which requires a four year university degree and you have trouble coming up with four lines of English dialog on your own. What on earth did they teach you (or not ) in all that time?) and what can you teach your students?

You call a trained and qualified teacher who can do his job (and a job you aspire to) a smartass. What does that make you?

come on girls. i'm really sorry.
i am thankful that you helped me out paulh. even though in hindsight you think that i shouldn't have asked for anyones help. but then again, as your replies indicate, i am a dumbass. thats why i needed just that little bit of extra help. i'm glad i'm not one of your students though. i'd be scared to ask anything.
anyway can we still be friends?
lots of love from zorro.

you can ask for help, thats what we are here for. Its not polite however to insult or make fun of the people who help you though. As Glenski mentioned its not our job to think of examples or do your job for you. We are not a free translation service.

Maybe you were trying to be clever but sarcasm doesnt travel well through the written word.

an interesting point you raised about sarcasm not translating into the written word very well. i did a bit of research and thought that as someone who is interested in linguistics and internet communication (as you obviously are from looking at your previous posts) you might like to take a look at these sites.

http://www.linguistics.ucsb.edu/faculty/cumming/ling50/sarcasm.htm
http://www.knotmag.com/?article=599
http://homepages.spider.lu/blueberryjane/sarcasm.html

there is no sarcasm above. in future i will highlight sarcastic statements
}some of the posts on this website are so interesting{

lots of love, zorro.

Zorro,

In filling out your application, what did you use as your country code? I keep trying to use "001" (for the U.S.A.) but the application keeps reading 'error'.

Any help?

Thanks

The country code for the US is "1" not "001". Same as Canada.

001 is the international code you use for dialing outside the country
