I apologize, but I searched a lot and couldn't find any info on here, so I will post.
I just got an offer for around 10500 yuan for Shanghai, without accommodation, teaching around 60 hours a month.
Is that good for Shanghai? |

Figure 4000 for a semi nice place, 500 for electricity internet etc.
You'll have 5500 left...that's laughable. |

The salary is not high by ex-pat Shanghai standards, but it is liveable, depending on the area and your lifestyle. You could find somewhere decent for less than 4000RMB.
If you have one daily commute, that means maybe 250-350 RMB on travel.
Eating out at a western style restaurant or equivalent , once a day , 1500RMB.
Other food and personal expenses maybe 2000RMB.
The huge drain, IMO, is 'entertaining' - bars, clubs and paying for others (GF, BF etc), and taxis back home, and the temptations of things like Starbucks and western groceries, which will eat through your salary.
I think there are FTs in Shanghai on similar, or maybe less, money.
My former students have to survive Shanghai on 3000-4000 RMB salaries, sharing pretty meagre apartments , making their own lunch boxes etc. |

Dont live in shanghai on less than 18000 rmb. 5000 rmb in a small town would be more fun. shangers is really expensive and a decent place with no commute is over 6000 and you need 3 months rent in advance. |

I don't recommend it. If you are certain you want to be in a Tier-1 city (which is a good idea), Beijing is more liveable on that kind of money.
Totally agree with the poster who said you need 18,000 in Shanghai. Anything less would be miserable. |
