|
|
Can anyone with experience living/working in the UAE or more specifically in Abu Dhabi help with my questions about moving there to work as a teacher with my soon-to-be husband?
About Me:
I'm hoping to work as a Middle School English Teacher with ADEC a position they've been recruiting for, and I am fully qualified, 4 years teaching experience, certified teacher, Masters in Education and Masters in English, Undergrad in English, all my teaching experience is in English (1 year ESL, 3 years English Lit and Comp) so no worries on my part.
Him:
BA in Business Management but zero teaching experience, no post-grad degree, so definitely not qualified to teach.
My questions are:
1) Will he be able to find work in Abu Dhabi?
2) Will he need to find it before going so he can arrive on his own work visa, or after we arrive, meaning he would come into the country on a spousal visa.? (I've also heard that wives can work on husband's visas, but not the other way around.. can anyone add some more insight to this standard?)
3) Will the amount of time we've been married affect our ability to obtain visas? (Again, heard somewhere... probably wasn't even about UAE... that the marriage had to be 6 months old or something)
4) If he would need to find work before arriving in the country, can anyone recommend resources to begin a search? Good websites, etc?
A little more about his work experience if that helps: He has experience working in a distribution center (not sure they have many of those in Abu Dhabi) and 7 years experience as a manager/supervisor position with a focus on logistics. Ironically...his current employer (FedEx) actually has a facility in Abu Dhabi.. but I don't think they'd have any need or desire for hiring and sponsoring a visa for him.
Thanks in advance for your helpful responses, they are very much appreciated! |

Your fiance definitely should check with FedEx to see about transferring to the UAE---no harm in asking. As for employment websites, obviously, an Internet search using something like jobs UAE brings up links to the major job sites. Given that he only has a BA, he should be open to applying for a variety of opportunities including those located outside of Abu Dhabi. |

There is a lot of logistics work in Abu Dhabi.
The number of people fleeing HCT is a furniture removal goldmine in itself, though the existence of a FedEx office in Abu Dhabi is really in absolutely no sense whatsoever 'ironic'. |

Not sure what you are talking about here... FedEx isn't in the removal business... assuming that you have more than one small box or two.
K&R... First get your teaching job and its benefits and then he can job search when he gets there. He is probably not of a level to get a better employment package than you. You can only peruse the employment websites and see what might fit his skills and experience. BUT... but very careful as many of these websites are scammers. Watch out with anyone that wants money (by Western Union or such) up front or for visas or whatever. Take a look at the scam warning thread above. Since we are an education website, few of us know much of anything about searching for non-education related jobs.

He might qualify for something like Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, (ADIA) or something along those lines. He should get creative and market himself to any big businesses like banks, car companies, supermarkets etc. There will be something for him if he is persistent, and he has the advantage of being on your visa, which overcomes a big obstacle in getting hired. |

If you read my post a little more carefully you will see that at no point did I say FedEx was in the removal business.
I merely pointed out that:
a) There is a lot of logistics work in Abu Dhabi, partly because of a swift turnover in expats living there, and...
b)The fact that a company with offices around the world has offices in Abu Dhabi is not ironic. |

I for one am not an education website, nor indeed a website of any description. |

His chances should be quite good in Abu Dhabi, they'd be even better in Dubai - many ppl commute from one to the other on a daily basis. Check out the Jebel Ali free trade area - there is a tonne of freight forwarding happening there.
Technically he should have a agreed job and work permit before he arrives, I don't know anything about a spouse visa but it's very common (if not totally legit) for people to arrive on a tourist visa and look for work. Depending on his passport it shouldn't be too difficult to leave every 30-40 days to one of the neighbouring countries like Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, etc on a visa run.
As for website resources; try gulftalent, bayt, dubizzle, gulfjobsmarket, indeed.ae. |
