Hi, I am teaching in Ankara, Turkey. I was wondering if anybody else is in Ankara teaching ESL or if anyone has experience living in Ankara. Also, does anybody know the best way to meet other Westerners in this city?

I am also teaching in Ankara. Arrived here in August. I have found that it is fairly hard to meet others outside of the native's you are teaching with.

It takes a little effort on your part to get out and meet other people.

If you are interested, drop me a pm and we can figure something out; coffee, beer, etc.

While the choices in Ankara are very limited I would suggest hopping on a bus and heading down Tunus way to Tunali Street. Very busy and entertaining in the day and even more so at night. Lots of ex-pats and English speaking Turks as Embassy Row is next door and the major universities in town run free shuttles there for their students unit 1:00 a.m. Scores of bars with live music and a crowded street scene in the evening.

I had the pleasure of living in Ankara for about 10 months in 2006. I enjoyed my time there immensely and was quite sad to leave. I had a good job, lived in a great section of town (Gaziosmanpasa), and could afford a beautiful furnished apartment because I was making lots of money. I was 53 at the time and had little desire to explore the club scene. There were many cafes nearby where I could relax with a beer when needed. I used to love walking around the area I lived. Most of the embassies and consulates were there, and Erdogan's residence was only a 20 minute walk away.

There is a web group called ankara expats, it is a Google group and there are hundreds of expats n foreigners on it from all walks of Ankara life. They organise all sorts of social events.... if you send me an email address, I can ask for you to be added. You could even organise a social yourself.

Wow, you mean people can actually organize themselves into social groups in the capital city, maybe even have a christmas day lunch together, now that would be nice, I mean NICE!
Now what are the chances of something like that hapenning in a city like Izmir?
Answer..... absolutely bloody ZERO!!!
