A number of readers of this forum have, or have had, permission to work independently. That was the status I sought, and obtained, when I first came to Mexico; in part, thanks to this forum.

The new laws, which went into effect last November, also make reference to this status, so it's clearly available; but, I wonder if any readers know of a case in which this was sought under the new laws by someone who did not already have temporary residency in some form, and therefore would need to get a visa.

To make my question just a little clearer, do you know of a case in which someone went to INM with their documentation seeking approval of the issuance of a visa abroad, such that they could- having obtained this approval- go to a consulate or embassy abroad to pick up the visa and reenter the country to work, independently?

It would make sense to me that there should be such a path to a visa, but I haven't put the question to INM.

This probably isn't very helpful to most. But I have been on a tourist visa for years... coming and going as necessary as to not overstay.
With the new laws.. I was able to switch from a tourist visa to a permanent residency visa based on "vinculo familiar" I have a son who was born in Mexico. I am also married to a Mexican, but I was under the understanding it was more of a 'sure thing' as a mother to a Mexican citizen. With the old law, this wasn't a possibility... I would have had to go the temp visa route for two years first.

I may get a chance to help someone try applying for a visa to be issued abroad, to work independently after they reenter on the visa. They are here, now, and I will suggest they use the online form that employers would use to get permission to hire- just making it clear that they will be the employer, if approved.

Has someone else stumbled across another page in the INM website that seems more appropriate for the tramite requesting a visa for independent work status? I haven't.
