|
|
I'm considering the jump to Taiwan from Mainland China. I've been legally employed here since I first arrived 3 1/2 years ago and am starting to get tired of the red tape involved changing and increasing every year. I recently visited Taiwan on holiday and was absolutely blown away, and impressed, that it is basicially the polar opposite of China. Sure, I imagined that it would be quite different, but wow...
As the subject mentions, I'd like to work somewhere other than at a buxiban. If it comes down to that, I can deal with it as long as its not an impersonal McSchool. I realize that will mean I probably need to go there in person as opposed to being hired from abroad.
The main obstacle is that I am not certified to teach in the public education system where I am from. I know it would be a good investment to go back and do that, however at this point in time it's not in the cards to not only spend that kind of money, but also simultaneously not earn money.
Qualifications:
3.5 years teaching experience (mostly adults, but I have had some part time jobs teaching kids classes as well as 1-1)
Unrelated BA
CELTA
MA Applied Linguistics with TESOL badged major
What are my realistic options? Thanks. |

You're over qualified for Taiwan. They only want a BA... any BA. The CELTA is already overkill. With those quals you should be looking at coining it massively in the ME!!! |

That is definitely in the cards for the future, however I am still in my 20s. |

I was in Taiwan from ages 22-25, then left for Saudi. |

Is your experience before or after the MA? Your age doesn't matter as long as you have 2-3 years post MA experience.
I would stay away from Saudi - it's definitely not for everyone. |

It's all before. I mentioned my age simply because I'm not exactly ready to be a mercenary just yet in exchange for missing out on a lot of aspects of life that I regularly enjoy, and I don't just mean alcohol or females. I have found some Saudi Universities that would accept me as I am now, however I'm enjoying this part of the world right now and would like to continue that for at least the immediate future. |

From what I've seen, Dubai wants a teaching credential from your home state/province/whatever. Perhaps once or twice I have seen ads from technical colleges that would accept those with enough experience + CELTA. Those jobs paid less than Saudi typically does. |

With an MA in Applied Linguistics with a few years of experience, you are qualified to teach at the university level in the UAE.
Try UAEU, Zayed University, HCT, and American University of Sharjah. Sometimes they prefer prior teaching experience in the Middle East, but not always. |

What if you have very little experience post-MA? |

I think that the general 'rule' amongst the better employers in the UAE is that a person should have at least a few years of teaching experience post-MA (and preferably in the ME). However, I do know plenty of people (myself included) who got hired directly after completing their MA. |

Those positions in the UAE indicating a teaching credential from your home country are for teachers licensed to teach content at the k-12 level. Ditto for some vocational school TEFL positions.
I suggest you post your Mid East questions on the country-specific forums for more exposure. |

That's where I found my information, as well as in a number of job advertisements. |
