Hello everyone-
I am new to the Nova scene and will be in the Tokyo area in July. I was hoping to get connected to the gay community within the Nova Group, if there is such a thing? Any responses are appreciated! My boyfriend will be joining me later in the year as well... Thank you in advance for all replies. Email is welcome as well! |

I really should let others answer this question, but if you are asking about company sponsored or approved gay communities, I doubt such a thing would exist at any school in Japan, let alone Nova.
Now, if you're wondering whether there are other gay teachers at Nova, I'm sure there are (and this is good, since it's better for those of us who are not....more girls for us! )
But seriously, although it's no problem to be gay in Japan, I think this would pose a problem if your superiors at Nova, and/or the students' parents found out you were gay (this is what I have heard from people who have worked for Nova).
But I'll be quiet now and let the others answer this....sorry I can't give you any good news (though I usually do give very good news)

Don't think you will find a specific group at Nova but there are plenty of gay people around Nova.
Why don't you try gnj.or.jp
and jguyusguy . Not sure of the exact address but you can search and find it easily enough.
Nova isn't a lifetime career, so if you haven't been out before it would be a good chance. Probably wouldn't go there with students though myself, but then again why not? If they ask and you tell the truth there is really nothing to loose. They won't fire you over it. Maybe just limit promotion but it isn't a very high ladder to climb. |

dude, forget any "NOVA Community". If you're living in or around Tokyo, head straight to Shinjuku ni-chome and have a good time.
Like most gay precincts it's safe and sleazy, friendly and pretentious, down to earth, really camp and quite fun!
Gay or not, ni-chome is hands down one of the coolest places in Tokyo! |

As a former Nova teacher I can say that there is no Nova gay community. Some of my fellow teachers were gay and my last AAM (Assistant Area Manager in the Fujisawa area) is gay. I met some gay guys from Shane also. Often in Metropolis Magazine (if you are going to the Tokyo area) in the classifieds, you can find personals and advertisements for clubs or organizations for gays. Metropolis is a weekly English language Magazine that features articles about Tokyo, people, places, art, music.... it also has an extensive classified section. If you are coming to the Tokyo area you will probably be given a copy of the magazine during orientation. Or, you can go online at the following:
http://metropolis.japantoday.com/default.asp
If you go through Osaka, I don't know what they have there.
I hope this is a little help. Check out Metropolis and maybe you can find someone who can provide you with first-hand knowledge before you get to Japan. |

Here are a couple of websites to check out:
For extensive Asia-wide LGBT listings (nightlife options, organizations, etc), check out www.utopia-asia.com.
And here's a site that's kind of like an Asian version of gay.com: www.fridae.com. It's a news portal, with member profiles and such. I'm looking into moving to Asia to teach English (it's not definite yet but it's an option) and this does seem to be a good way to orient yourself and meet people (for friendship or whatever).
Best of luck to you and the bf. |
