Anyone living in Yamagata? I will be teaching/living there shortly (I'm leaving Canada on Thursday) and would like to hear from anyone with info regarding the city/area. Are there many foreigners there? I was originally supposed to be placed in Numazu (near Fuji-Shi), but decided against that based on what I had discovered about the "not-so-clean" air issues. If any of you know about both places, which would you choose?

Smile Thanks

Fuji shi is a disgusting place but Numazu is OK... Not an exciting place itself but ver very conveniently located to Tokyo/Hakone/Izu.

Yamagata is a pretty clean place (no industry) but VERY RURAL and not very conveniently located. Except for Fuji shi, wherever you end up I'm sure you will enjoy.

If you like to ski and eat beef then Yamagata City is the place for you. I haven't lived there, but I've visited a couple times. The people in Yamagata are really friendly. Unfortunately, the dialect is very hard to pick up. I've seen many foreigners near the train station.

It's not convenient to anything, but snow. The shinkansen goes there, but it will still take about 4 hours to Tokyo.

I think Yamagata City would be a pretty nice place to live. I'd need to have a good job though as there aren't so many golden opportunities to be had there.
