I've been researching about social insurance in Japan recently and read that new employees aren't supposed to pay social insurance for the first month that they are employed. Is this true?

I've been in Japan for about 3 months now, working for a dispatch company (I know they're not great). I've been enrolled Shakai Hoken as I work full time hours. My first paycheck was for 1 week of work in August and I was deducted the full amount for social insurance for that month.

I don't know if I should call them out on it or just drop it.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Staff at my school are on a slightly different system (shigaku kyosai rather than shakai hoken) but it doesn't matter if you are enrolled for 1 day or 31, you still pay the full premium for the month.

It's a real pain in the wallet if you start at the end of the month, or return from maternity leave, but there you go.

Edit: never heard about the first month being free and certainly not true for us, sounds like an urban myth if anything.
